City Council Briefs

Recent Actions Taken by the Emeryville City Council

Editor’s Note: The City Council did not meet on Tuesday, July 1st, 2008, for the scheduled summer recess period.

Site B Soil Remediation Project.

The Council approved a waiver of the noise ordinance to allow generators during weekends and evenings at Site B soil remediation project at Powell and Shellmound streets. The vote was 4-1 with Councilmember John Fricke dissenting.

Marketplace Redevelopment Project Takes Another Step Forward.

No public opposition was voiced to approving the preliminary development plans that call for a combination of townhouses/condos and retail development and a park to be built out over 25 years. Council members were impressed by endorsements from environmentalists, but split 4-1 over length of development time and loaning developers $10 million. Councilmember John Fricke was the lone dissenting vote. Councilmembers Nora Davis and Dick Kassis noted the developer might need time to take a hiatus in a bad economy without losing approval of plans and said the city had rebuilt itself from industrial waste land through similar loans or redevelopment. Several council members did ask developers to review feasibility of building the park earlier.

Planning Commission, General Plan

Update Members Approved.

The Council approved three appointments to the Planning Commission and one to the General Plan Update Task Force. See separate story in this issue for details.
